Women in Medicine

Association of American Medical Colleges Programs for Women

AAMC offers several programs for women, including career development workshops for women early in their careers (Assistant Professors), and for mid-career women faculty (Associate Professors).  Dates for future workshops can be found at AAMC web site (link), but the early career workshop is usually in July whereas the mid career program usually takes place in December.

Information about each program is sent via the AHSC listserv a month or so before the application deadline, with a request that those interested contact the Faculty Affairs office.  More than one individual can attend, assuming sufficient funds.  If several women apply, applications are reviewed by the Dean’s Council on Faculty Affairs. While the office of Faculty Affairs will provide partial financial support for the workshops, it is expected that the department will cover approximately 50% of the cost, in addition to the faculty member’s salary.  If you are interested in more information about these programs, we can connect you with a previous participant.

AAMC also designates a Women’s Liaison Officer (WLO) at each School of Medicine, who is charged with communicating opportunities for women and with assisting in the development of programs to facilitate the success of women faculty. The current WLO for the UA College of Medicine is Anne Wright.
