Women in Medicine
Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine for Women (ELAM)
ELAM is the only national program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for leadership at academic medical centers.
Begun in 1994, ELAM is an intensive year long course that combines traditional MBA training, such as in finance and organizational theory, with activities that enhance personal and professional development around leadership, career advancement, communication, and the use of new information/learning technologies. During their year with ELAM, fellows gain a broader and deeper knowledge of the challenges facing academic health centers through meetings with national leaders in the field, interactions with their peers in the program, and interviews with a wide range of senior officers at their own institutions. Fellows also undertake a long-term action project that addresses an institutional need or goal while providing an opportunity for leadership and greater visibility.
ELAM’s mission is to increase the number of women at AHCs in leadership positions and their success rate in attaining and remaining in these positions. More than 50 of its 425 graduates currently serve in the highest-level leadership ranks, from associate dean through university president, including 4 of the 12 women deans at U.S. medical schools, 3 of the 10 women deans at U.S. dental schools, and 1 of the 5 women deans at U.S. osteopathic schools.
ELAM is a core program of the Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. The Institute continues the legacy of advancing women in medicine that began in 1850 with the founding of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the nation’s first women’s medical school and a predecessor of today’s Drexel College of Medicine. For more information on the ELAM program curriculum, faculty, and participants, visit the ELAM web site at www.drexelmed.edu/elam.
The UA College of Medicine is committed to fostering the development
of women leaders and intends to send promising senior women to
ELAM. To date, the College of Medicine has sponsored three ELAM
fellows: Setsuku Chambers, MD, Mindy Fain, MD, Ana Maria Lopez, MD, Kathy Reed, MD, and Anne Wright,
PhD. Notice of the approaching deadline for application is
sent via the AHSC listserv, and applications are reviewed by previous
ELAM fellows and the Dean.
