National Center of Excellence on Women’s Health (WCoE)
In 2003, the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office On Women’s Health awarded The University of Arizona the prestigious designation as a National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, one of only twenty academic institutions providing a model for the nation by offering comprehensive and innovative health care solutions to women, especially minority and underserved women.
The WCoE has a multidisciplinary team of health care providers, researchers, administrators and staff committed to the belief that women deserve health care that supports their unique needs in every stage of their lives and is based on the most recent scientific evidence.
The WCoE provides:
- An integrated model for the delivery of clinical health care services to women with an emphasis on prevention and early detection of diseases and conditions;
- A multi-disciplinary research agenda focused on women's health issues;
- Educational programs and materials for the general public and health care professionals on women's health;
- The integration of a women's health focus and gender specific medicine into professional medical education;
- Promotion of leadership for women and girls through motivation, mentoring, and role modeling;
- Efforts to foster the recruitment, retention, and promotion of women in academic medical careers;
- Networking within the community to form alliances with business groups, consumer groups, scientific organizations and public policy leaders; and
- An evaluation plan to assess project outcomes and effectiveness.
